Savills (UK) Limited - A Garden for Children

The Savills ‘plot-to-plate’ garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 was donated by Savills to the national charity, The Shaw Trust after the Show.

Savills approached Gillian to design and create a garden for the children’s home in Nottinghamshire repurposing some of the landscaping materials and plants from their Main Avenue garden. Gillian was honoured to ‘take the baton’ from Mark Gregory of Landform Consultants, who designed and built the garden at Chelsea.

Gillian was deeply moved by the work of the The Shaw Trust, and wanted to create a garden that was playful, educational, but also provide a calming space for the children to relax and just be themselves, reusing whatever materials and plants that might be available from Chelsea. This required a fluid concept design that Gillian could adapt on the ground at the time of the build. The area set aside for the garden relocation was dark, uninviting and unused.

She found inspiration from her own childhood, playing hopscotch with her siblings, and as such the York Stone paving was laid in a fun pattern to invite and encourage those walking along the path, whether adult or child to skip or hop along. The garden also includes a bespoke Teepee-shaped den, a mud kitchen in the form of a potting shed, a sunken trampoline, swing and monkey bar. There is a picnic table, log seat using wood from the site (from trimming trees to allow more light into the garden and reclaimed pantiles from Chelsea), and boulders for seating, and a large water bowl. She also added fruit trees, a silver birch and shrubs for structure and all year round interest.

It is a garden that will grow and evolve with the children.

We would also like to thank Creepers Nursery and CED Stone for their contribution to the project.

A very special thanks goes to Andrew Drake and his dedicated team at Precision Landscapes who worked tirelessly and good-humouredly with Gillian to bring this project to life in a matter of weeks.

Show Gardens - RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Since achieving RHS Gold with the Hillier Staging Team in 2013 while a garden-design student, Gillian has been fortunate to continue working annually at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Gillian is very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Paul Hervey-Brookes, who she considers one of her mentors, including in his ‘Renaissance Garden’ for BrandAlley on Main Avenue 2014 (awarded Bronze), and Fernando Gonzalez in 2015  - ‘Pure Land Foundation Garden’ (awarded Silver-Gilt) in the Fresh Gardens.

She has been honoured to work closely in recent years at Chelsea with 20-plus-time RHS Gold Medal winner Sarah Eberle. Sarah is the most decorated designer in RHS Chelsea Flower Show history. She has also worked with Sarah on occasions outside of the Show, and was hand-picked as part a team for a large private residential project in Oxfordshire.

Gillian is professionally and affectionately known as Sarah’s ‘right hand, arm and backbone’.

In 2016 it was double Gold for The Viking Cruises Mekong Garden in the Artisan Gardens category, and Hillier Nurseries' ‘In Spring’ garden in the Great Pavilion.

In 2017 it was a further double Gold for The Viking Cruises ‘Garden of Inspiration’ in the Artisan Gardens category, and Hillier Nurseries' ‘Spring Garden’ in the Great Pavilion.

Gillian created and supported the build of the Hillier exhibit in the Great Pavilion, which won its 73rd consecutive Gold Medal in 2018.

Watch the ‘The Plants - Stihl Inspiration’ video to find out more about the Hillier exhibit plants launched at the Show, as well as some of the other exciting plants featured in the Gold medal award-winning garden.

The British Council Garden - India: ‘A Billion Dreams’ in the Artisan Gardens category was created simultaneously with the Hillier garden in 2018, and was awarded a Silver-Gilt, just missing out on Gold.

In 2019 they brought to life The Resilience Garden, a Main Avenue Show Garden sponsored by The Forestry Commission and Gravetye Manor winning Gold and the Best Construction award.

When the Chelsea Flower Show was moved to September in 2021, the sponsor was The Bible Society and the garden was inspired by Psalm 23 - The Lord is My Shepherd. They were awarded Gold, Best in Category and Best Construction.

In 2022, Gillian joined forces once again with Sarah Eberle to bring to life the Gold-medal winning ‘Building the Future’ garden for sponsors, Medite® Smartply on Main Avenue at Chelsea. The garden was also awarded Best Construction.

Trade Exhibit - RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Gillian was delighted to be commissioned by CORE LP to design their first ever Trade Exhibit at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2022 to showcase their landscaping products.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and uplifting experience working with Manni Keates and Harvey Keates, the Directors of CORE LP (both pictured in the slides) and their team. The planting palette chosen by Gillian and the garden furniture (provided by Oxley’s Outdoor Furniture and our neighbours at Chelsea) were colour pops to complement the featured products. The design and exhibit showed how to make the most of a small space but one that could also be adapted for a larger garden.

Covent Garden in Bloom: Chelsea Fringe 2018

As part of Covent Garden in Bloom and Chelsea Fringe 2018, Gillian designed and created a pop-up installation for Capco Covent Garden in the famous London landmark’s East Piazza in collaboration with Darran Jaques, and Covent Garden’s then Head Gardener, Kenny Raybould (also known as ‘the Prince of Plants’), titled 'Moments of Reflection'.

Chelsea Fringe is separate to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Early Spring Fair 2018

Gillian collaborated with Urban Creations to design a temporary pop-up installation outside Westminster Cathedral (opposite London Victoria Station) for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

They were given a bistro table and chair by the RHS and were asked to create a feeling of spring - in February! - to promote the opening of the RHS Early Spring Fair at Lindley Hall, London, and to attract attention via social media:  #RHSLondon.

Starting on site at 5.30am, working in -2C with the assistance of two street lamps, the pop-up had to be finished by 7am in time for early- morning commuters.  It was to be dismantled later that evening and then reinstalled 'live' at Lindley Hall while guests were arriving.

The installation was inspired by the proverb, No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow

BBC Children in Need DIY SOS Big Build

Gillian had the opportunity to support BBC Children in Need 2013 when working with the DIY SOS Big Build Challenge Team for the Little Miracles charity in Peterborough.  Little Miracles offers a unique lifeline for families of children with complex additional support needs.

It was an ambitious project by the whole team requiring them to completely rebuild the centre and gardens with only 9 days to complete it.  The team included the internationally-renowned garden designer:  Chris Beardshaw and the world-renowned interior designer, Nina Campbell.
